Irish poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh penned this deceptively sweet song, which is set to the traditional tune, "The Dawning of the Day." He was compelled to write these lyrics by a former lover's criticism that he only wrote about mundane subjects like sheep and vegetables. Please note that many great things have been written about sheep. Vegetables, not so much.

I saw the danger, still I passed along the enchanted way,

The Queen of Hearts still baking tarts and I not making hay -

I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that's known

And word and tint. I did not stint, I gave her poems to say
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds o'er fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
